The correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported eyewitnesses in the village of al-Fallahat near the American-occupied base as saying that the barrage sent plumes of smoke rising from inside the facility. US helicopters flew in over the base and its environs.

Ar-Ramadi.

Resistance attacks US Bradley armored vehicle in ar-Ramadi Sunday morning, reportedly killing five American troops.

In a dispatch posted at 1:06pm Makkah time Sunday afternoon, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that a large Iraqi Resistance land mine exploded by an American Bradley armored vehicle on 17 Street in ar-Ramadi, about 110km west of Baghdad, at 11am local time Sunday morning. The correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported workers in the Asbagh an-Nahrayn factory that is located near the scene of the attack as saying that three Iraqi Resistance men followed up the explosion of the mine by firing pipe rockets at the armored vehicle, totally destroying it and killing the five American soldiers who were aboard it.

Al-Fallujah.

In a dispatch posted at 1:39pm Makkah time Sunday afternoon, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that US occupation troops shot and killed Shaykh ‘Abbud Ahmad al-Hamdani, one of the chiefs of the al-Bu Hamdan tribe in the western area of as-Saqlawiyah, about 15km northwest of al-Fallujah, on Sunday morning. The correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported a source in the al-Fallujah puppet police as saying that al-Hamdani was in his car headed from his home in as-Saqlawiyah towards al-Fallujah when American troops deployed in date palm groves on that road opened fire on him, killing him instantly.

In a dispatch posted at 11:50am Makkah time Sunday morning, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that an Iraqi Resistance bomb exploded by a US patrol in al-Hadithah on Saturday. The correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported eyewitnesses as saying that the Resistance bomb went off by a patrol of several American vehicles near the al-Hadithah dam on the main road between al-Hadithah and the city of ‘Anah to the northwest.

The blast destroyed one US Humvee but the nature and extent of US casualties was unknown because American forces quickly surrounded and sealed off the area where the attack took place for three hours. Since early Saturday morning, US forces have had the entire city of al-Hadithah and nearby areas such as al-Haqlaniyah and Barwanah sealed off and under an apparent curfew for reasons which are unclear.

US helicopters flew into the area immediately after the attack, probably to evacuate dead or wounded Americans.

Baghdad.

London Sunday Times: US moving closer to open endorsement of three-state split of Iraq.

The London Sunday Times newspaper reported “informed sources” as saying that an “independent commission” set up by the US Congress with the approval of President George W. Bush and headed by an “old friend” of the Bush family ミ former US Secretary of State James Baker ミ is expected to recommend splitting Iraq into three” highly autonomous” regions.

The Times reported that the so-called Iraq Study Group, co-chaired by James Baker, the former US secretary of state, is preparing to report after November’s congressional elections at a time when sectarian violence spearheaded by the security forces and police of the US-installed regime and Shi‘i sectarian militias and death squads allied to it have been sharply increasing their acts of kidnap torture and murder of Sunnis in an effort to clear Sunnis out of whole regions of Baghdad and other parts of Iraq.

The British newspaper reported that the sectarian killing sparked by the Anglo-American occupation and its local backers is claiming the lives of 100 civilians a day. Meanwhile the attacks by the Iraqi Resistance against US occupation troops are running at record levels ミ an average of one attack on the Americans every 15 minutes, according to US journalist Bob Woodward.

The Sunday Times reported that the mounting virulence of the Resistance has made the Baker commission increasingly interested in the idea of splitting apart the Shi‘i, Sunni, and Kurdish regions of Iraq as the only alternative to admitting defeat and fleeing the country ミ what Baker calls “cutting and running” ミ or simply remaining in the country and sustaining ever-mounting casualties.

The Times reported that due to the sensitivity of the issue of splitting up Iraq, the Baker Committee will not advise overt “partition,” but rather a “federation” that will leave the country nominally united but grant all but symbolic power to the three sectarian regions. According to the Times, the Baker plan is expected to recommend that the puppet regime in Baghdad remain “in charge” of only foreign affairs, border protection, and the distribution of oil revenue ミ all of which are in reality controlled by the American occupation regime, headquartered in the so-called “Green Zone.”

Since the US occupation of Iraq in the spring of 2003, American policy has been geared to aggravating sectarian and ethnic differences and turning the various components of Iraqi society against each other. As the futility of imposing effective US control over the country has become more and more apparent, the Americans have increasingly promoted separatism in the country and the idea of a total partition of Iraq has attracted more and more support among American policy-makers.

The Times quoted a source close to the Baker Committee as indicating that the partition of the country is the only solution that the US has been able to come up with for Washington’s Iraqi dilemma. “The Kurds already effectively have their own area,” the source pointed out, concluding that “The federalization of Iraq is going to take place one way or another.” The Times quoted the source as saying the Iraqis will be left the task of figuring out how they want to implement the American partition decision, or as the Times quoted him as saying: “The challenge for the Iraqis is how to work that through.”

Baker, 76, an old Bush family friend who was secretary of state during the first Gulf war in 1991, said last week that he met the president frequently to discuss “policy and personnel.”

Efforts to split Iraq along religious and ethnic lines ミ which often are masked under language about forming an Iraqi “federation” ミ are consistent with plans that US and Zionist politicians have long been cultivating.

The American version of the strategy for a partition of Iraq appeared in the article “The Three-State Solution” published in The New York Times on 25 November 2003 by Leslie Gelb (President Emeritus of the US Council on Foreign Relations). The same idea was reiterated, this time with “bi-partisan support” in the article by Gelb and US Democratic Senator Joseph Biden in “Unity through Autonomy in Iraq,” in The New York Times on 1 May 2006.

Earlier, the idea of splitting the Shi‘ah in Iraq from the rest of the country was a cornerstone of the neo-Conservative strategy laid out in “A Clean Break” a paper drawn up by American Zionist government officials Richard Perle, Douglas Feith, David Wurmser, and Paul Wolfowitz in 1996 for the then Zionist Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Then in 2000 the neo-Conservative Project for a New American Century wrote Rebuilding America’s Defenses on the basis of the “Clean Break.”

But before the recent period, the idea of “the dissolution of Iraq into a Shi‘ite state, a Sunni state and the separation of the Kurdish part” was voiced by veteran Zionist military correspondent Ze’ev Schiff in Ha'aretz on 2 June 1982 and was a part of the divide-and-rule strategy laid out by Zionist writer Oded Yinon in his “Strategy for Israel in the 1980s,” published in Kivunim (Directions), A Journal for Judaism and Zionism, published by the World Zionist Organization in occupied Jerusalem in February 1982. (It was translated by the late anti-Zionist writer and activist Israel Shahak and is widely available.)

Uncertainty about how to effect a partition of Iraq while not strengthening Iran have long prevented the US from adopting a clear and consistent policy in favor of splitting up Iraq. As a result a state of “managed chaos” has prevailed in the country, where the American occupation incites sectarian and ethnic division while from time to time striking out at the Jaysh al-Mahdi and other Iranian-backed militias that take part in sectarian attacks when their activities threaten to “go too far.”

Resistance bombards puppet “Iraqi Interior Ministry Shock Troop” headquarters in western Baghdad’s al-Jihad district midday Sunday.

In a dispatch posted at 12:36pm Makkah time Sunday afternoon, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that a short while earlier, Iraqi Resistance forces had fired a violent barrage at the headquarters of the puppet “Iraqi Interior Ministry Shock Troops (Maghawir) in the al-Jihad neighborhood of western Baghdad.

The Baghdad correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported local eyewitnesses as saying that more than 11 mortar shells blasted into the former National Security College, a facility that has been occupied by the puppet “Shock Troops” since shortly after the American invasion of Iraq in spring 2003.Flames and smoke could be seen rising from the facility after the mortar barrage and Iraqi puppet forces surrounded and sealed off the main street in the area of al-Jihad.

Salah ad-Din Province.

Al-Ishaqi.

Resistance ambushes American food convoy in al-Ishaqi, destroying five trucks and killing five mercenary drivers Sunday afternoon.

In a dispatch posted at 5pm Makkah time Sunday afternoon, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that Iraqi Resistance forces burned up five trucks hauling food supplies to US occupation troops in the city of al-Ishaqi, about 85km north of Baghdad on Sunday afternoon.

The Tikrit correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported eyewitnesses as saying that Resistance men ambushed a convoy of eight trucks loaded with food supplies and provisions heading towards the US base near the al-Ahli dairy plant in the western part of al-Ishaqi. The witnesses said that the attack destroyed five trucks and left five drivers dead ミ one Turk and four Asians. After the attack, US troops surrounded the area and launched searches in the villages surrounding al-Ishaqi looking for the Resistance men. They found no sign of them, however.

The correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported eyewitnesses as saying that the bomb went off in the middle of Maryam Market in the city, destroying a US Humvee and killing two American troops and wounding three more of them.

Diyala Province.

Al-Miqdadiyah.

Resistance car bomb in al-Miqdadiyah reportedly kills two American troops who were trying to disarm it Sunday afternoon.

In a dispatch posted at 5:30pm Makkah time Sunday afternoon, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that a short while earlier an Iraqi Resistance car bomb exploded while a joint detachment of US and Iraqi puppet police were trying to disarm the device in the at-Tayih area near al-Miqdadiyah, about 85km northeast of Baghdad.

The Ba‘qubah correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported a source in the Iraqi puppet police as saying that an explosives-packed car blew up when a team of US troops and Iraqi puppet policemen were trying to disarm the bomb that had been discovered. The source said that two American troops were killed and three more US soldiers were wounded in the blast. Two Iraqi puppet police were also killed and another 12 of them wounded in the explosion as well. At the time of reporting US and Iraqi puppet army troops were deployed in the area where the car bomb exploded. No one is being allowed to approach the area.
