It blew up as a US personnel carrier with five American troops aboard drove over it. The powerful explosion destroyed the vehicle and killed all five US troops.

The work began on the east side of the city and continued until the entire length of the city had been covered in concrete preventing anyone, in a vehicle or on foot, from getting into the city except through specific gates.

Religious leaders in the city issued a legal opinion (fatwa) saying that it was legitimate to resist anyone helping the occupation in its campaign to build this cement wall around the city. The correspondent reported a source in the Iraqi puppet army as saying that the work to build the entire wall could take a full month to complete, the aim being to keep Resistance fighters from entering or leaving the city.
