米紙、検閲黒塗りで掲載　イラン政策批判の寄稿論文

　【ニューヨーク２３日共同】２２日付の米紙ニューヨーク・タイムズは、米国家安全保障会議（ＮＳＣ）の元幹部らが執筆したブッシュ米政権のイラン政策に批判的な寄稿論文について、ホワイトハウスが機密に当たる部分があるとして一部削除を求めた部分を黒塗りにして掲載した。政権への抗議とみられる。

　同紙と執筆者は、削除を求められた個所が既に別のメディアなどを通じて報じられている内容で、機密には当たらないと主張。「民主主義において政府の透明性は尊重され、保護されるべきだ」と批判した。

　論文はＮＳＣの中東問題担当だったフリント・レベレット氏や国務省でかつてイランとの交渉に当たったヒラリー・マン氏が執筆。米国では安全保障などの分野にかかわった元公務員が寄稿や出版をする場合、中央情報局（ＣＩＡ）の検閲を受ける必要がある。黒塗り部分は全体で８カ所に及び、一段落丸ごと黒塗りの部分もあった。

Iran and America: A Censored Tale (3 Letters)

To the Editor:

Reading the Op-Ed article by Flynt Leverett and Hillary Mann (“What We Wanted to Tell You About Iran,” Dec. 22) filled me with a sense of foreboding. Actually seeing the redacted version, with its blacked-out sections, sent a real chill down my spine.

Are we heading toward a dictatorship, like apartheid South Africa, where ideas that do not reflect the administration’s policies are denied to the public? This is patently unconstitutional, and I look forward to the day when the courts validate Mr. Leverett and Ms. Mann’s view, and when The Times publishes their full article.

Then I will know that balance has been restored to our nation.

To the Editor:

I was truly aghast at “What We Wanted to Tell You About Iran.” Our government has taken to censoring nonclassified material in our nation’s newspaper of record? I would say that this marks a low point in our country’s history where official respect of the Constitution is concerned.

We have already lost our right to a fair trial and privacy. What’s one more breach? But there is a difference. Such media censorship can take place only in the public realm. Actions like these can’t be hidden in an unmarked server room or a foreign cell. I wish The Times the best of luck in receiving clearance for the censored parts of the original article.

As someone not accustomed to writing letters to the editor, I can assure you of one thing: the American people will be watching.
