Baghdad.

Saudi paper reports US command banning American troops from using camera phones.

The Saudi daily newspaper ar-Riyad reported on Sunday that the US military command had recently issued orders prohibiting American military personnel, including commanders, from using cellular telephones that have cameras in them while on combat missions, in prisons, or even during interrogations of arrested persons in US military camps.

A story by Sa‘d al-‘Ajami in ar-Riyad and datelined “Kuwait” said that the ban was a preemptive measure aimed at forestalling any repeat of the sort of unauthorized video recording as was made during the American-backed “execution” of Iraqi President Saddam Husayn on 30 December 2006.

The reported ban follows a sharp increase in the number of home-made videos turned out by US troops in Iraq that have showed up on the Internet, threatening to breach the Pentagon’s tight regime of control on information coming out of occupied Iraq.

Al-‘Ajami also reported in ar-Riyad Sunday that the US had decided to carry out the largest troop rotation since the US invasion of Iraqi in the spring of 2003. In February, al-‘Ajami reported, 40,000 US troops would be brought in to take the place of another 40,000 Americans who are to head home to the United States via Kuwait. In the coming two weeks the Pentagon intends to open public bidding by companies in Kuwait and other Gulf countries for contracts worth US$4 billion to set up logistical support bases in the region where maintenance of vehicles and equipment would be carried out. The activity would all be part of the huge troop rotation which is now being envisioned after the US Democratic Party expressed its opposition to major increases in American troop strength in occupied Iraq, the paper reported.

In a dispatch posted at 4:09pm Makkah time Sunday afternoon, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that US and Iraqi puppet army forces imposed a curfew on the city of Samarra’, 120km north of Baghdad.

The correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported eyewitnesses as saying that the Americans imposed the lock down after rumors escalated that the local people planed demonstrations to protest claims by the puppet “Prime Minister” Nuri al-Maliki that the people of Samarra’ were supporting “terrorism” and blaming them for the mysterious bombing of the Imam al-Hadi Shrine in the city on 22 February 2006 ミ an incident that signaled the start of a country-wide rampage by pro-Iranian Shi‘i sectarian death squads that has continued until today.

The correspondent reported that residents of Samarra’ believe that Iran was behind the bombing of the Shi‘i shrine and that the sectarian puppet regime of Nuri al-Maliki permitted Iranian agents to get into the country to blow up the tomb in order to spark sectarian fighting and facilitate a drive to partition Iraq and allow Iran and its supporters to carve out a sphere of influence in the southeast of the country.
