Baghdad.

Captured Shi‘i sectarian gunmen reveal plan to destroy tomb, mosque of Sunni Imam Abu Hanifah an-Nu‘man.

In a dispatch posted at 2:56pm Makkah time Thursday afternoon, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that residents of the northern Baghdad district of al-A‘zamiyah captured three members of the pro-Iranian Shi‘i sectarian Jaysh al-Mahdi militia on Wednesday who confessed to have been planning to blow up the tomb of the Sunni Imam Abu Hanifah an-Nu‘man (699-767 C.E.), the founder of the Hanafi school of Islamic jurisprudence.

The correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported an Imam of one of the mosques in the al-A‘zamiyah district who wished to remain anonymous said that the Resistance captured three Shi‘i sectarian Jaysh al-Mahdi gunmen during an assault on the district Wednesday. Under questioning, the three admitted that “the Jaysh al-Mahdi would not quench its thirst for Sunni blood until they had opened the grave of Abu Hanifah an-Nu‘man and dug out his bones,” as they put it.

The three sectarian captives were interrogated overnight, the source said, and revealed a large-scale plan for an attack on the tomb of Abu Hanifah, which they intended to dig up. Another part of the plan involved the destruction of the historic mosque that adjoins the site. The plan was part of an effort to “take revenge” for the bombing of the Shi‘i Imam ‘Abd al-Hadi Shrine in Samarra’ on 22 February 2006.

US and Shi‘i sectarian sources have repeatedly claimed that the Iraqi Resistance had attacked the Shi‘i shrine, despite the fact that it was never harmed during the entire period when Samarra’ was in the hands of the Iraqi Resistance. Weeks later, however, after US occupation forces seized control of Samarra’, the Shi‘i mosque was blown up in an incident claimed by none of the predominantly Sunni Resistance organizations and condemned by the Sunni religious leaders in Iraq. At the time of that attack, demonstrators in Iran blamed Britain for having blown up the Samarra’ shrine in an attempt to spark sectarian violence.

The Sunni Imam who spoke with Mafkarat al-Islam called on Sunnis to be watchful and on the alert, in particular for the possibility that attacks might be mounted from the predominantly Shi‘i district of al-Kazimiyah, which lies on the other side of the Tigris River from al-A‘zamiyah. The Shaykh said that in fact the defenders of al-A‘zamiyah had taken precautionary measures in case of such an eventuality. In addition, he said, historical books and manuscripts that had been kept in the Abu Hanifah mosques, some of them a thousand years old, have been moved out and hidden so as to protect them in case of attack.

The Shaykh warned the pro-Iranian sectarians that should they attempt any such attack on the Abu Hanifah tomb or mosque, “it would be suicide for them, for their backs would be broken.”

Meanwhile a high-explosive Iraqi Resistance bomb exploded on the al-Kurnish Street in al-A‘zamiyah killing four Iraqi Shi‘i cement-barrier supply contractors working with US occupation forces. The al-A‘zamiyah area has been under blockade by US forces for two days.

It was members of the 101st that were responsible for the savage rape and murder of 14-year-old ‘Abir al-Janabi in al-Mahmudiyah in March 2006, the correspondent reported.

An Iraqi Resistance marksman in al-‘Amiriyah shot and killed a US soldier who was taking part in a patrol. The sharpshooter opened fire again and struck another of the US troops in the leg, according to Shaykh Abu Mun‘im a muezzin at the al-‘Abbas Mosque.

The Americans then took cover behind the walls of the mosque and began to shout obscenities and insults directed at the Prophet Muhammad in an attempt to get the Resistance sharpshooter to come out and be killed. But the Resistance fighter responded only by firing again and killing a second American soldier.

The correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported that the blast killed seven followers of ‘Ammar al-Hakim and wounded another 11. The media controlled by the puppet regime claimed that “innocent people” had been killed in the explosion but the correspondent pointed out that the motorcycle was propped up right next to the door of the store that had been stolen from the Sunni businessman just a few months back.
