As the United States debates the virtues of surges or escalations,
Iraqis are already dealing with the impact of increased US forces
on the streets.

Late last year the Coalition began placing more troops
on the streets of Baghdad, in an effort to quell “sectarian violence.”
Sunnis have so far felt the brunt of this,

a “stun grenade” similar to the M84.

It is clear that sectarian violence is shaking Iraq,
it seems unclear if military violence can now stabilize it.

They took my father, brother and cousin.
They stayed about 2 to 3 hours, destroyed our possessions,
stole our money, and then left.
These housing raids.
They use stun grenades and then storm into homes.

We told them, put out the fire so we can get out.
Then instantly a stun grenade or a bomb detonated,
destroying the door & windows.
They told us, "Everyone out now, women, men and children."
We went out of the house, into the street with our faces to the wall.
Then they instantly covered the heads of my husband, my son,
and our nephew with black hoods and handcuffed them.
This is the kitchen where the women were locked up.
Here we were forced to stay on this sofa,
he was pushing the table towards us, making provocative gestures,
and making fun of us while we were trembling.
These are the floor tiles and the blood of my brother-in-law's son,
they made him walk barefoot on the broken glass
and he was blindfolded by a black hood.
They took the men to the bathroom for questioning.
"Do you know so and so ?"
We don't know anyone.
『外に出ろ』と叫んでいました。

instantly we saw fire.
They provoke us.
And they didn't allow anyone to say a word.
Here there were carpets and mattresses that don't need,
I arranged them tidily here, they turned them all over,
upside down searching for something, but they didn't find anything.
