US policy “fuelling the disintegration” of Iraq

LONDON - The United States’ policies in Iraq are “fuelling the disintegration” of the war-torn Middle Eastern country, the Syrian ambassador to London wrote in The Guardian on Tuesday.
In a sometimes fiery comment piece, Sami Khiyami encouraged the United States to instead foster a “climate of understanding” between Arab states and Western countries.
His article came a day after Syria called for an unrestricted dialogue with Washington, as a senior US official made the highest-level visit to Damascus in two years for talks that were limited to the Iraqi refugee crisis.
Khiyami, in his article, accused the United States of implementing a “policy ... to encourage sectarianism, ethnic divides, regional xenophobia, and the eventual Balkanisation of the Arab Middle East.”
He went on to say, however, that a conference in Baghdad on Iraq’s future -- where American diplomats sat with their counterparts from Syria and Iran -- “could be a prelude to more fruitful negotiations.”
“The US must help create a climate of understanding between the west and the Arabs. A stable, secular and prosperous Middle East is the best way to undermine terrorism.”
He implored what he described as the “nations ruling the world” to be “wiser, fairer and more determined than in the past to find both a solution to the Iraqi conflict and also the Arab-Israeli conflict.”
