A statement issued by the British occupation forces said that the British base set up in the former presidential palaces in the al-Barradi‘iyah area south of al-Basrah came under Katyusha rocket attack. The British claimed that the barrage inflicted no damage.

The headquarters that came under attack contains the US and British consulates as well as a British military facility and is regarded as the only major British facility in the center of al-Basrah Province following the handover of facilities in the Shatt al-‘Arab Hotel to the puppet forces and the reduction of the number of British troops in the country.

As leaflets appear in al-Basrah denouncing Fadilah Party, Jaysh al-Mahdi continues effort to seize control of the city from Fadilah after its withdrew from Shi‘i sectarian governing coalition.

In a dispatch posted at 10:01am Makkah time Saturday morning, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that leaflets appeared in the southern city of al-Basrah on Saturday threatening the Shi‘i Fadilah (“Virtue”) Party after its withdrawal from the ruling Shi‘i sectarian “United Iraqi Alliance” coalition and following Jaysh al-Mahdi attacks on the Fadilah Party headquarters in the southern city.

The correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported that the leaflets, which were unsigned, described members of the Fadilah Party as “traitors” and apostates from Shi‘i Islam.

The Shi‘i “Islamic Virtue” or Fadilah Party announced on 7 March 2007 that it was withdrawing from the so-called “United Iraqi Alliance,” a Shi‘i sectarian coalition that includes the Da‘wah Party of puppet “Prime Minister” Nuri al-Maliki, the Supreme Council for the Islamic Revolution in Iraq (SCIRI) led by ‘Abd al-‘Aziz al-Hakim with its Badr Brigade militia, and the Jaysh al-Mahdi militia headed by its leader Muqtada as-Sadr.

The Virtue Party held a press conference in Baghdad on 7 March where it announced its withdrawal from the coalition, saying that it had been transformed into a “hatemongering sectarian bloc.” The Virtue Party, which has 15 seats in the puppet “Iraqi Parliament,” dominates the city puppet government in al-Basrah, but then the party’s withdrawal from the Shi‘i sectarian consensus and the reduction of British forces in the southern city prompted the Jaysh al-Mahdi to launch a drive to seize control of al-Basrah from the Fadilah as the British depart.

Saturday morning Mafkarat al-Islam reported that checkpoints controlled by the Iraqi puppet army blocked the main streets leading to the puppet “Provincial Government” building as well as most other main streets in the city. Business traffic in the area was completely insecure, the correspondent noted, as the Fadilah Party continued to work at controlling and cleaning up their burned out headquarters, despite the threats coming from the Jaysh al-Mahdi organization.

The Fadilah headquarters was burned down during an attack by the Jaysh al-Mahdi militia on Thursday, 22 March. On the same day, it was reported that the Jaysh al-Mahdi also attacked the home of the puppet “governor” of al-Basrah, Muhammad Musbih al-Wa’ili, who is a member of the Fadilah Party.

Thursday’s fighting in al-Basrah began when Jaysh al-Mahdi gunmen tried to storm the Electricity Distribution Department near the al-Basrah Provincial Government building in an attempt to take over there. A detachment of armed members of the Fadilah Party resisted the Jaysh al-Mahdi assault, preventing their getting into the building but inflicting casualties in the process.
