Al-Hakim said that the word “revolution” means a change and that that was what the Council had been striving for since its inception. But, he said, there is now no longer a need for the word “revolution” in the organization’s name, since the Iraqi government of President Saddam Husayn had been overthrown by the American occupation, in which the SCIRI’s armed wing, the 30,000-man Badr Brigades, had taken part alongside the American invaders.

The AMSI denounced the killing in a statement that went on to “remind the occupation, the present government, and the militias that the blood of Iraqis will not flow cheaply and that the day of vengeance for the criminals and murderers will not be long in coming.”

The AMSI issued another statement Saturday in which it denounced the arrest of Shaykh Ahmad Buraysim, a member of the AMSI and the Imam of the al-Bashir Mosque in al-Miqdadiyah, 85km north of Baghdad last Wednesday. Five worshippers in the mosque were arrested along with the shaykh by the Americans and their puppet “Iraqi National Guard” allies.
