Mortars hit aircraft at U.S. base in Iraq, police say

Insurgents destroy US helicopter, damage nine in Iraq

Two killed in attack on Green Zone, Iran, US scheduled to meet soon in Iraq to discuss security.

WASHINGTON - Insurgents destroyed a US military helicopter and damaged nine others in a mortar attack on a US airfield north of Baghdad, a US defense official said Wednesday.

The attack, which occurred Sunday at a US air base at al-Taji but was not disclosed by the US military command in Baghdad, also wounded four US servicemembers, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

"One helicopter was destroyed and nine were damaged," said the official, who said that six of the damaged helicopters have been repaired and are "fully mission capable."

Insurgents appeared to have targeted the aircraft rather than have struck them with random fire, the official said.

"There was some counter-battery fire," the official said.

Attacks have damaged aircraft in the past but the military has rarely, if ever, reported so many helicopters being hit in a single insurgent attack.

At least two types of helicopter were damaged in the attack but the official would not say what they were.

Two killed in attack on Iraq's Green Zone

Two people were killed and another eight wounded when 10 mortars slammed into Baghdad's heavily fortified Green Zone, a US embassy official said on Thursday.

In the attack on Wednseday afternoon, "around 10 mortars impacted on the International Zone, wounding eight people and causing two deaths," US embassy spokesman Lou Fintor said.

The two people who were killed and six of the wounded were Iraqis, Fintor said, adding that the other two were "third country nationals," meaning they are neither American nor Iraqi.

Powerful explosions rocked the Assassin's Gate area near the Iraqi defence ministry and the US embassy compound, which is inside the walled district and has in recent weeks become a prime target for insurgent attacks.

On Tuesday, five contractors working for the US embassy were wounded by "indirect fire", an embassy spokesman said. On May 2, two Indians, a Filipino and a Nepalese working for the embassy were killed in a rocket attack.

Iran, US to meet May 28 in Iraq

Iran and the United States are to meet at ambassador level in Iraq on May 28 to discuss security there, Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said Thursday in Islamabad.

"There is going to be a meeting between Iran and the US at ambassador level in Iraq on May 28 to discuss the security situation in Iraq," Mottaki announced during a conference of Islamic foreign ministers.

"Nothing but Iraq is on (the) agenda for Iran and US talks," he said. "The talks will strictly be focused on the security situation in Iraq."

He added: "We are facing two problems in Iraq, one relates to instability caused by terrorist activities and the other by continuation of occupation of Iraq.

"We believe that the correct approach to the issue is to look into both areas of difficulties."

The confirmation of the date for the talks comes days after Iranian officials said that the rare talks would be held within the next few weeks, most likely in Baghdad.

Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Wednesday punctured any expectations that the meeting would produce a breakthrough, saying its policy of not negotiating with the United States was unchanged.

Khamenei said Iran would merely use the talks with US diplomats over Iraq to remind Washington of its "occupiers' duty" in the conflict-torn country.

The United States insisted Monday that the talks did not presage a retreat from its near three-decade-old policy to isolate the Islamic republic, with White House spokesman Tony Snow saying the contacts will be "about Iraq and only Iraq."

US Senate rejects troop withdrawal bid

Anti-war Democrats in the US Senate lost a bid to use Congress's power of the purse to compel President George W. Bush to withdraw most combat troops from Iraq by March 31, 2008.

But defiant Bush opponents, smarting Wednesday from again failing to handcuff Bush on war strategy, vowed to step up a battle of attrition in the hope of ending a four-year entanglement which polls show, most Americans now oppose.

The latest burst of acrimony between Congress and the White House on Iraq, also drew new battle lines for a tough round of compromise talks, also involving the House of Representatives, on a new war funding budget next week.

"Our resolutions have not passed, but they will pass, I don't know how many more bodies will come home, how many more injured soldiers there will be," said Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin.

The Democratic measure, overwhelmingly knocked down by 67 votes to 29, would have required troop redeployments to start within 120 days of the bill becoming law, and would have choked war financing when complete.

The Senate was expected to vote on Thursday on a resolution clearing the way for new talks with the House and White House aides on producing a merged replacement budget that Bush would sign.

A Republican amendment sponsored by respected Senator John Warner, that required Bush to report to Congress in July on the Iraqi government's progress towards certain political benchmarks, scored 52 votes for and 44 against.

Though short of the 60-vote threshold needed to advance, Democrats billed the tally as a sign of increasing Republican disquiet over war strategy.

US base attacked in Iraq :: latest

Mortar rounds hit a US Air Force base north of Baghdad today, destroying one helicopter and damaging nine others, police said.

The attack at Taji, a major Air Force on the northern outskirts of Baghdad, occurred about 2am local time, the police said.

In a brief statement, the US military said: "There was an indirect fire attack on the base at Taji which resulted in damage to some aircraft."

Indirect fire is a term the military generally uses to describe rocket or mortar attacks.

An Iraqi civilian who works at the base said he saw about 16 damaged helicopters, some of them set on fire by the mortar attack.

Many US Black Hawk helicopters are based at Taji, including some equipped with medical equipment and manned by medics to rescue wounded US and Iraqi soldiers in the Baghdad area.

Sunni insurgents have long been active in the area around Taji.
