Deployment Note NOT Passes in Parliament

TURKEY, March 01, 2003 - The Note of deployment was rejected in Parliament General Body Meeting with the grounds of not having the absolute majority. It was needed 268 'Yes' votes. At the hour of 7:11 PM in Turkish Time.

Discussions still continue. The government requests one more voting session.

A Prime Ministry note for sending Turkish troops abroad and deploying foreign troops on Turkish soil in the event of a possible Iraq operation was discussed today in Parliament's General Assembly, where deputies agreed to the terms sought by the government. At the request of the Justice and Development Party (AKP), deliberations were conducted in a closed-door session, meaning that the talks will be treated as top secret for 10 years. The first results of the voting are at the hour of 7PM in Turkish Time (GMT+2):

264 representatives voted 'Yes,' 251 representatives voted 'No' while 19 representatives voted 'Undecided' in the closed voting session. Total 534 representatives joined the voting.
