“中東戦争”開始(？)とアナウンス
●たしかに「20世紀」は間もなく終焉を迎えるわけで、その歴史
的転換期に妄[みだ]りな意味づけをしようと目論む勢力は、少
なからずいるに違いない。
●私が読んでいるメルマガの「Real World News」は、基督教
的なバイアスがかかったニュース選択をしているとはいえ、ニ
ュースの見出しを知るにはそれなりに重宝する情報源なので、
参考にすることもあるのですが、本日配信の「RWN」の中東関
連ニュースはちょっと看過できないものがあったので、見出しだ
け紹介しておきます。

する態勢に入っているという。まあ、こういう物騒な情報を
宣伝して相手を牽制する“ハッタリ”の部分もあるのかも知れ
ないが……。
●興味深いのは、この横文字引用の末尾にある
「ZEALOTS PREDICT APOCALYPTIC END TO UPRISING 」
という記事。 「ハルマゲドン」を予言しているシオニストのカルト
集団が、米国あたりの基督教原理主義者やイスラエルの極右
に政治的・軍事的な影響を与えているという。 こうした連中に
よれば「ハルマゲドン」はすでに始まっているらしいけど、パレ
スチナが建国宣言をしたら、即座に「戦争」が本格化して核戦争
に発展するとか言ってる。 物騒なのは、イスラエルに核爆弾
発射能力のある潜水艦を与えているのはドイツなんだとか……。
20世紀のシオニスト勢力とドイツとの関わりを総括すると、
常識的な勧善懲悪では理解できないような状況が出てきて
いるように思える。 互いに利用し、利用され、といったところか。
●そしてもうちょっと視野を拡げて欧州外交史や植民地政策史
という観点から、ドイツとイスラエルの腐れ縁を眺めると、両方
とも悲惨な利用のされ方で、地獄行きの心中を遂げようとして
いると――ずいぶんと情緒的な表現で恐縮ですが――見えなく
もない。

ISRAEL PREPARES FOR ATTACK ON PA
Israel is preparing for an attack on the Palestinian Authority.
Officials said the attack is envisioned after the Nov. 7
presidential elections in the United States. They forsee the
Palestinians unilaterally declaring a state in the West Bank and
Gaza Strip from Nov. 7 to Nov. 15 and launching attacks on Jewish
settlements in the areas. Over the past month, Israeli Prime
Minister Ehud Barak has appealed to U.S. President Bill Clinton for
a green light for an attack on the PA that would end the violence
and resume the peace process. So far, Clinton has rejected Barak's
request.

ISRAEL'S NEW SUBS TO BE EQUIPPED FOR FOR FIRING NUKES
Germany has provided Israel wit
h aid to prepare three conventional
submarines for a nuclear attack. The Berlin-based Der Spiegel
reported Sunday that the German government provided Israel with
financial and technical aid to allow the Jewish state to launch a
nuclear second strike in response to any Arab nuclear attack. The
weekly said the three Dolphin-class submarines delivered to Israel
can be converted to allow them to fire nuclear warheads.

ISRAEL: SYRIA WILL PAY FOR HEZBOLLAH ATTACKS
Defense officials are in the process of formulating a
recommendation to strike at Syrian interests and targets in Lebanon
if Damascus continues to allow Hezbollah and Palestinian groups to
attack Israel along the Lebanese border. Prime Minister Ehud Barak
has, up until now, resisted adopting a military response and
continues to use diplomacy - via the United States, the United
Nations and others - to try and bring pressure to bear on Syria and
Lebanon to prevent further attacks on Israel from Lebanese territory.

PLO PLANS ANOTHER MEETING ON STATEHOOD
The PLO plans to meet to set another date for Palestinian
statehood. PLO Central Committee chairman Salim Zaanoun said his
panel will meet during the second half of November to discuss a
Palestinian constitution and a date for statehood. Zaanoun said
that the opposition Hamas and Islamic Jihad will attend the
session. Palestinian sources said the committee will probably delay
the expected announcement of statehood on Nov. 15, the anniversary
of the 1988 declaration of independence issued by the PLO. A new
date being raised is Nov. 29, when the United Nations voted in 1947
to partition the British mandate of Palestine.

ISRAEL BRACES FOR TWO-FRONT WAR
Israel is preparing for a two-front war as Syria appears to have
given the Hizbullah and its Palestinian allies the green light for
attacks on the Lebanese border with the Jewish state. Israeli
defense officials said the government of Prime Minister Ehud Barak
assesses that Hizbullah will launch attacks together with an
offensive by Palestinian Islamic groups. They said they have
intelligence information of two Hamas squads that have infiltrated
Israel in an attempt to launch terrorist attacks.

ISRAELI ARMY HAS PLANS TO TAKE OFFENSIVE
The Israeli army is planning to initiate attacks in Palestinian
areas following a month in which their defensive actions failed to
halt violent street clashes, military sources indicated Sunday.
The Israeli military's Chief of General Staff, Lt. Gen. Shaul
Mofaz, Sunday advocated the new tactic saying that, "Israel must
revert to initiated activity in the territories." Ehud Barak has
authorized the new plan, which calls for ambushes, patrols,
and
undercover activity in areas from which Palestinian attackers have
set out on their near-daily confrontations with Israeli troops.

around the Temple Mount Faithful, run by Gershon Solomon, an
Israeli Jew, and his predictions that the final battle of "Gog and
Megog against Israel" had already begun. Some of their doom-laden
prophesies have been echoed by the Israeli Right, which has said
that Israel now faces a battle for its existence. For the Temple
Mount Faithful and its overwhelmingly Christian followers, there is
no question that the end is nigh.

Zealots predict apocalyptic end to uprising

THREE Palestinians were killed by Israeli troops in continued violence on the West Bank yesterday, which Christian and Jewish fundamentalists said showed that Armageddon was approaching.
Two Palestinian men were killed in Nablus while demonstrating over the death of a third. They were shot in what has become a deadly ritual of the “al-Aqsa intifada”, when stone-throwing youths face Israel’s bullets. Another Palestinian man died after being shot by Israeli tank machinegun fire at the Karni crossing between the Gaza Strip and Israel. Christian groups have, since the turn of the millennium, rallied around the Temple Mount Faithful, run by Gershon Solomon, an Israeli Jew, and his predictions that the final battle of “Gog and Megog against Israel” had already begun. Some of their doom-laden prophesies have been echoed by the Israeli Right, which has said that Israel now faces a battle for its existence.
Yassir Arafat, the Palestinian leader, yesterday added to their paranoia by warning that the “al-Aqsa intifada” would not stop “until a boy or a girl holds the flag of Palestine over Jerusalem, the capital of our Palestinian State”.
In Lebanon Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of Hezbollah, called on all Palestinians to launch suicide attacks to kill as many Israelis as possible.
For the Temple Mount Faithful and its overwhelmingly Christian followers, there is no question that the end is nigh. “All of the prophesies of Ezekiel, Isaiah and Zechariah are coming to pass. We can even predict that there will be a nuclear war,” Mr Solomon said.
Most Israelis would not agree. The Left has, however, been shaken by the Palestinian uprising and the readiness of Ehud Barak, the Prime Minister, to offer a senior place in the administration to Ariel Sharon and his right-wing Likud Party to save his government from collapse when the Knesset returns from its summer break today. Mr Barak said yesterday that the formation of a national unity government was “close”, although Mr Sharon continued to insist on a veto over peace efforts.
The first flight from the Palestinian territories to break the ten-year UN air embargo on Iraq landed in Baghdad yesterday, carrying 20 wounded from the uprising.
