Taliban becoming popular amid US attacks

By Behroz Khan

JALALABAD: The Taliban regime has been able to win over unprecedented support of the Afghan nation, thanks to the US and its allies attack on Afghanistan causing large scale destruction and loss to human lives, especially civilians.

And not only the popularity graph of the Taliban regime goes up with every passing day due to intensified air strikes, the hatred for America, Britain and also Pakistan is on the rise. President General Pervez Musharraf is the most unwanted person in Afghanistan today, who had won hearts of the Pushtun nationalists by supporting the Taliban government, which is led by the majority population of the war ravaged country.

Slogans against America and Musharraf welcomed the delegation of foreign journalists everywhere they went during their two-day visit to the eastern city of Jalalabad. Majority of the Afghans, whom were interviewed at random by the journalists, said it was because of Islamabad's pro-US policy that the people of Afghanistan were paying the price. Pakistan is losing its image among the Afghans as a friendly country and the entire nation is turning very hostile against Islamabad due to its policy, which, they believe, brought bombs and missiles as a gift of friendship.

This was clear from the mood of the people, especially, in Krhum village, which was bombed and levelled to the ground, killing about 200 nomads, the natives, Kochis. "Why was our village bombed? Why our families perished and what was their sin? were the questions, which the survivors from the village asked from the visiting journalists. "It was like a doomsday. We had nowhere to run for shelter. Even the under ground bunkers were not safe enough to save our families," said Azizullah.

Despite the day and night bombing, the morale of the common Afghans is very high and the majority of them are not against Taliban, or at least those, who were interviewed at random by the journalists. "This is not an attack on Taliban or Osama bin Laden, but an attack on the independence and sovereignty of our country," said Fakhruddin, a school teacher in Jalalabad. In a smart move to fully exploit the situation, Taliban guards seem very lenient these days towards their people and have started mixing up with the common Afghans.
