Israeli Plans to Assassinate Arafat Uncovered

GAZA CITY, Oct 18 (IslamOnline & News Agencies) - Israel is plotting the assassination of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat and other senior figures in a bid to destroy the peace process, top Arafat aide Nabil Abu Rudeina charged Thursday.

"The Palestinian Authority has discovered Israeli plans to assassinate President Yasser Arafat and other Palestinian leaders," Abu Rudeina told Agence France-Presse (AFP).

"It aims to destroy the Palestinian Authority and the peace process," he said.

"We have asked the United States and the international community to move urgently to stop this Israeli plan and the Israeli aggression," he added, warning Israel not to "play with fire."

Abu Rudeina, who did not give details of the plans allegedly unearthed, was speaking a day after Palestinian gunmen, for the first time, targeted an Israeli cabinet member, Tourism Minister Rehavam Zeevi.

Zeevi was shot down in an attack aimed at seeking revenge for Israel's oft used and internationally condemned policy of assassinating Palestinian leaders.

Since the beginning of the current, yearlong Palestinian Intifada, or uprising, against illegal Israeli occupation, Israel has assassinated 59 Palestinians.

In the days prior to Zeevi's death, Israel assassinated three Palestinian political leaders.

Since the attack on the U.S. on September 11th, Israel has increased its attacks on Palestinians - sustaining the deadliest violence on the Occupied Territories since the beginning of the Intifada - in an attempt to insert itself into the "war on terrorism", despite calls from the U.S. that there is no role for Israel in the coalition against terrorism.

An assertion that seems to have become part and parcel of Israel's justifications for its illegal policy of assassination of Palestinians is the guise of "fighting terrorism".

A spokesman for Israel's hawkish right-wing Prime Minister Ariel Sharon dismissed the Palestinian assassination claim as a "baseless smokescreen".

He reiterated Israeli demands that the Palestinians hand over Zeevi's killers immediately, although he said no exact deadline had been given to avoid it becoming a point of negotiation.

He also said the Palestinians must "dismantle the operational infrastructure of all terrorist organizations."

The Jewish state said that if Arafat did not comply and extradite the killers, it would consider him to be hosting terrorist organizations, as the United States considers Afghanistan's hardline Taliban regime to be harboring Osama bin Laden.

Arafat's Palestinian Authority (PA) condemned Wednesday the killing of Zeevi, saying it opposed "all acts of assassination," including by implication, Israel's policy of assassinating alleged Palestinian resistance activists.

The PA has since outlawed the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), the group claiming responsibility for the killing of the minister.

Israel and Sharon have been widely criticized by the U.S. and the international community for seeking to use the current situation, in the aftermath of the attacks on the U.S., to validate its policy of assassinations and to further seek to decimate an illegally occupied Palestinian population, of whom nearly 800 - mostly Palestinians under the age of 18 - have been killed due to Israeli aggression over the past year.

Meanwhile, two ministers from Sharon's right-wing Likud party called on the government to kick Arafat out of the Palestinian territories.

"We have to get rid of Yasser Arafat by expelling him from the region," said Finance Minister Silvan Shalom on Israeli public radio.

Environment Minister Tzahi Hanegbi made the same proposal on Wednesday.

U.S. President George W. Bush and British Prime Minister Tony Blair declared earlier this month their support for an independent Palestinian state which would include within its borders the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.

Foreign Office minister Peter Hain told BBC Two's Newsnight program that a Palestinian state was vital for security in the region and even referred to the Palestinian Authority chairman as "President Arafat"

Hain also courted controversy by saying that U.N. resolutions, which have demanded the return of "Old Jerusalem" to the Palestinians and the end of Israeli settlement in the West Bank, will have to form part of the "background" to talks, the BBC reported.

Israel has yet to comply with U.N. resolutions and international law regarding the illegally occupied Palestinian territories.

And a spokesman for Israeli settlers in the West Bank town of Hebron called for Arafat to be "eliminated" in retaliation for the assassination of ultra-right wing nationalist Zeevi, who had championed their cause, and proclaimed, "Let the Arabs go back to Mecca."
