CIA gives close read to romance

Oct. 30 -- The hottest reading among some CIA operatives these days is a romance novel. But it’s not just your run-of-the-mill bodice ripper; it’s a book that is believed to have been written by Saddam Hussein.
“ZABIBAH AND THE King” was released in Iraq earlier this year and the Arabic language book became an instant success. The novel was published anonymously -- the cover said coyly that it was “a novel by its author” -- but U.S. intelligence officials suspected that the book was penned by Saddam Hussein himself.
Now, in the wake of last month’s terrorist attacks on the United States, CIA officials are taking a second look at “Zabibah and the King.” There’s belief among some intelligence sources that the book contains encoded messages.
The book is heavy with allegory. It involves a love triangle between a king (perhaps symbolic of Saddam), Zabibah, who intelligence officials say represents the Iraqi people, and her cruel husband (who represents the West). Zabibah is raped and killed on Jan. 17, the anniversary of Desert Storm.
“If it wasn’t written by Saddam Hussein himself, the feeling [at the CIA] is that it was written with his very close supervision,” says a source familiar with the situation. “It was looked at [by the CIA] very closely when it came out, but now, in light of the attacks, they’re taking another very careful look at it. There’s a possibility it has encoded messages. At the very least, it gives an insight into [Saddam Hussein’s] thinking.” The source declined to say exactly what clues or messages the CIA is looking for in the book, saying “that’s a matter of national security.”
