Ailing Bin Laden 'Treated Secretly For Kidney Disease'

Kidney stones rather than Stealth bombers could deal a mortal blow to Osama bin Laden it appeared yesterday after reports that the al-Qaeda leader recently smuggled himself into an expensive Gulf hospital.
Needing urgent treatment for his ailing kidneys, bin Laden, 44, is said to have checked into the American Hospital in Dubai in July. Among those with him, it is thought, was Dr Ayman Zawahiri, who as well as being his personal physician is al-Qaeda’s second-in-command.
The report in Le Figaro and on Radio France International said that bin Laden had stayed in hospital for ten days. There have been persistent rumours about the frailty of bin Laden’s health.
In recent videos he is generally not seen moving about. When he does take a few steps it is with the aid of a cane. Aides blame an back injury.
Intelligence sources believe that bin Laden bought a dialysis machine earlier this year which he had shipped to Kandahar. His problem now will be operating such equipment and the risk of infection if, as seems likely, he is hiding out in Afghan mountains.
Last year the magazine Asiaweek said bin Laden was dying of a kidney disease. In desperation he is said to have turned to the United Arab Emirates, one of the three governments that recognised the Taleban regime.
Bin Laden is known to have influential supporters in the Emirates and to have kept substantial funds in bank accounts there. He is believed to have flown out of Dubai on the morning of the September 11 hijackings.
According to Western diplomatic sources the UAE was the nearest safe destination for bin Laden to get the high quality, modern and urgent treatment he needed.
Quoting an unnamed manager at the American Hospital, Le Figaro said that bin Laden arrived in Dubai on July 4 accompanied by four bodyguards, an Algerian male nurse and Dr Zawahiri, who stayed at his side at all times.
They had flown to Dubai from Quetta in Pakistan. The newspaper said that bin Laden was treated in the urology department, run by Terry Callaway, a Canadian-trained doctor, and left on July 14. Dr Callaway is a specialist in kidney stones and male infertility.
During his stay, Le Figaro said, bin Laden was visited by a CIA agent.
One source said that the US agent was "recognised taking the main lift in the hospital to go to Osama bin Laden’s room". The agent was recalled to the US on July 15, the day after bin Laden left hospital, the newspaper said.
The CIA last night flatly denied the report. Its spokeswoman, Anya Guelsher, said that it was "complete nonsense".
A diplomatic source said earlier: "There are lots of rumours flying around Dubai. At first sight, it seems highly unlikely that a member of the CIA would go and knock on bin Laden’s hospital bedroom door."
Bernard Koval, the director of the 100-bed hospital that opened in 1995, also denied that bin Laden had been a patient there. Dr Callaway was unavailable for comment.
Intelligence sources in France also questioned yesterday what US agents did with information that Paris passed to America about bin Laden’s terrorist ambitions just a few days before September 11.
One of his lieutenants, Djamel Beghal, a French-Algerian, who had been arrested in Dubai on his way back from Afghanistan to Europe, allegedly told police that he had been told by al-Qaeda to plan a terrorist attack on the US Embassy in Paris.
Le Figaro said that on September 7 the French intelligence service met embassy officials in Paris to pass on the information.

Osama bin Laden underwent treatment in July at the American Hospital in Dubai where he met a US Central Intelligence Agency official, French daily Le Figaro and Radio France International reported today.
Quoting "a witness, a professional partner of the administrative management of the hospital," they said the man suspected by the United States of being behind the September 11 terrorist attacks had arrived in Dubai on July 4 by air from Quetta, Pakistan.
He was immediately taken to the hospital for kidney treatment. He left the establishment on July 14, Le Figaro said.
During his stay, the daily said, the local CIA representative was seen going into bin Laden's room and "a few days later, the CIA man boasted to some friends of having visited the Saudi-born millionaire."
Quoting "an authoritative source," Le Figaro and the radio station said the CIA representative had been recalled to Washington on July 15.
Bin Laden has been sought by the United States for terrorism since the bombing of the US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania in 1998. But his CIA links go back before that to the fight against Soviet forces in Afghanistan.
Le Figaro said bin Laden was accompanied in Dubai by his personal physician and close collaborator, who could be the Egyptian Ayman al-Zawahari, as well as bodyguards and an Algerian nurse.
He was admitted to the urology department of Dr Terry Callaway, who specialises in kidney stones and male infertility. Telephoned several times, the doctor declined to answer questions.
Several sources had reported that bin Laden had a serious kidney infection. He had a mobile dialysis machine sent to his Kandahar hideout in Afghanistan in the first half of 2000, according to "authoritative sources" quoted by Le Figaro and RFI.

More that this, it seems relevant here to return to the versions implying that those terrorist attacks were in the interests of secret services and the US military industrial complex, which PRAVDA.Ru has written about immediately after the attacks. Anyway, Mr. Bush Jr.’s administration, which may have sanctioned the meeting of bin Laden with a CIA agent, will have to explain its behaviour. And not only to the American people.

If you can't beat absurdity, use absurdity

Sez here in The Washington Post that among Pakistanis, support is waning for the U.S. military effort against Osama bin Laden and his Taliban hosts. A front-page story Monday datelined Islamabad reports that, "In elegant drawing rooms as well as run-down mosques, many Pakistani Muslims insist that Israel must have been behind the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in the United States." This is opportunity knocking for the U.S., even though opportunity has chosen to call at the madhouse door.
According to a conspiracy theory that has reportedly swept through the Islamic world, Israel plotted the September massacres to make Islam look barbaric, deflect attention from the intensifying Palestinian problem, and manipulate the U.S. into a war against all Muslims. The major supporting "evidence" for this crackpot belief is a report originating in the Arab press about Jewish employees at the World Trade Center. Supposedly, 4,000 Jews were forewarned of the coming attack and stayed home on Sept. 11. According to a familiar piece of paranoid ratiocination, "only the Mossad" could have carried off such an operation.
Thus, the people gathering in Islamabad's elegant drawing rooms perceive Osama bin Laden as Israel's patsy, and the U.S. military actions against his Taliban protectors as unjust.
How should the U.S. respond to this? Should it try to persuade Pakistanis and others of the truth by presenting factual evidence? Sure, but that probably won't have much effect. People believe in grand conspiracies because conspiracies meet a need. In this case, embracing a purported Israeli plot may be preferable to confronting an unspeakable crime committed in Islam's name, or it may reinforce a pernicious anti-Semitism (often associated with an array of purported Jewish conspiracies). Whatever the reason, one rarely persuades conspiracists by showing them counter-evidence; for them, counter-evidence is part of the cover-up that is part of the conspiracy.
But the U.S. has an alternative, admittedly an unusual one: It could use the conspiracy theory, altering its story line so that it supports American interests rather than undermining them. To address this, one has to understand a couple of things about how conspiracy narratives work.
First, most conspiracy stories contain a series of familiar subplots. This one, for example, is centered on the subplot of Forewarned Survivors, a feature that also turned up in some narratives attached to the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing. In that case, 123 "forewarned" employees of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms supposedly stayed home on the morning of the bombing, thus "supporting" the charge that the U.S. government itself was responsible for the plot.
Second, such subplots are inevitably strung together by leaps of paranoid faith. That's inherent to the narratives. After all, if one could connect all the dots with specifics, these wouldn't be conspiracy "theories"; they'd be demonstrable. In this case, it is paranoid faith that somehow connects the Mossad schemers to their bin Laden patsies.
But the central role of paranoid faith makes such stories inherently unstable, which is why many such narratives generate numerous versions of themselves. The classic cases involve the many "solutions" to the Lincoln and JFK assassinations, and the conspiracizing of Jack the Ripper. Paranoid faith is always seeking to morph into a subplot. And therein lies the American opportunity.
If the weakest point of the Mossad conspiracy narrative is the actual role of bin Laden-the-patsy, then the solution to the problem is to recast bin Laden. How? Glad you asked. As it happens, there is an extremely useful subplot waiting to be exploited: The Arab Leader as Zionist Agent. A long series of Middle East leaders -- from Egypt's Nasser to Syria's Assad to Libya's Ghadafi to Arafat himself -- have inspired actual rumors that they were either secret Israeli agents or Freemasons (to many minds the same thing). Why? Like many similar narratives, these stories met a need. Such leaders made the Arab world look bad in some way; they led it to ignominious defeat, they massacred thousands of their own citizens, they behaved like buffoons, etc. Rather than confront the depressing reality of Arab political leadership, many persons chose to believe that such figures must be Zionist agents. According to the more colorful versions of these theories, these leaders even had the Star of David tattooed somewhere on their bodies.
In brief, a useful antidote to the "Mossad did it" story is a counter-version, circulated surreptitiously, that agrees that the Mossad did it to make Islam look bad and to foment conflict against Muslims, adding only that Osama bin Laden is the Mossad's knowing agent. Sound absurd? It is absurd. But millions of people already believe the absurd. If you can't beat absurdity, you counter it with a more useful version.
Would bin Laden fit the role? In fact, he's set himself up for it. The act he has committed is considered heinous and unacceptable by millions of Muslims, which is why they want to blame it on Israel; if they thought the murders praiseworthy, they wouldn't seek to transfer the guilt. Furthermore, bin Laden and his spokesmen have repeatedly praised the murders in their videotaped statements, promising more in Islam's name. Indeed, there is reason to speculate that bin Laden's gang is concerned about the popular perception among Muslims of the murders. In one tape, spokesman Sulaiman Abou Ghaith feels it necessary to defend the acts, saying "I would like to tackle an important point in this speech, which is that those youth who destroyed America and launched the storm of airplanes, they did good, by taking the battle to the heart of America." Bin Laden seems to realize he has narrative problems.
Could the U.S. spread a story like this? Sure, but not by the Voice of America or through "public diplomacy." This kind of thing is the work of so-called "gray" propaganda (so called because the information has no identifiable origin), by which damaging material is circulated through rumor and story planting. Effective military campaigns have made use of such operations at least since the days of Genghis Khan.
While such an operation would seem to be at Israel's expense, revising the Mossad rumor actually does Israel no new harm. In the meantime, it allows conspiracists to use the new story to meet the same avoidance needs that the former story met. All it does is use bin Laden's acts and words against him. Everyone knows that winning wars means winning hearts and minds. Sometimes the minds you encounter are twisted minds, and you have to use unexpected means to win them.

タイムズ紙はこの報道に触れ、「ラディンの病気は腎臓結石の可能性がある」と指摘。最近のビデオの映像などから判断し、「ラディンは動けないように見え、数歩動くにもツエが必要といわれる」と報じた。
腎臓結石は発汗に関係し、ラディンのように気温の高いサウジアラビアなど中東出身者に比較的発症率が高いといわれる。
同紙はラディンが今年初め、「人工透析装置をカンダハルに取り寄せた」との情報を紹介。腎臓病患者は水分を多く取る必要があることなどから、「もしラディンが電力やきれいな水が限られるアフガンの山間部に潜んでいるとしたら、問題は透析装置を使うことと、感染の危険があること」としている。
そのうえで、「ステレス爆撃機より、腎臓結石の方がラディンにとって、致命傷になる可能性がある」と伝えた。
目下のところ米国の猛追跡を巧みに逃れているラディン。だが、米国側は「デッド・オア・アライヴ（死んでいようが生きていようが）」としつつ、生きて捕縛しても、その処置に困るとの憶測がある。
かといって殺しては「イスラムの英雄」に祭り上げられる危険性もある。空爆に加え、地上戦もいまひとつ手詰まりムードが漂うなか、米国としてはラディンが病気で倒れるのが、最も望ましいシナリオか。
