Thevillagewherenothinghappenedisreachedbyasteepclimbattheendof
arattlingthree-hourdrivealongastonyroad.Untilnothinghappenedhere,
earlyonthemorningofSaturdayandagainthefollowingday,itwasalarge
villagewithasmallgraveyard,butnowthathasbeenreversed.Thecemetery
onthehillcontains40freshlyduggraves,unmarkedandidentical.Andthe
villageofKamaAdohasceasedtoexist.
何も起こらなかった村は、石ばかりの道を車で３時間程揺られた後、急な坂道を上った所
にあった。土曜日の早朝、そして翌日再びここで「何も起こることがなかった」までは、
ここは小さな墓地のある大きな村だった。しかし今はその逆だ。丘の上の墓地には新たに
掘られた墓が４０、墓標もなく全て同じだ。そしてカマアドの村は消滅した。

rubble,dentedandripped,aretokensofthesimpledailylivestheyled.
ここの家々の殆どは地上にできた深い円錐形のクレーターにすぎない。そのほかの家は大
きく裂け、潰れた段ボール箱のように割れている。何も起こらなかったその時、カマアド
の村人達は、日の出前、ラマダンの断食が始まる前の早朝の食事をとっていた。そして、
へこんで引き裂かれた瓦礫の中には村人達の質素な生活の形見があった。

爆裂で裏返しになったような歪んだブリキのやかん。焼けこげたなべ。古い足踏みミシン
の残骸。破壊された金属製の収納箱には、明るい色の安物のナイロン製の子供服が入って
いる。

Inanotherroomaretheonlyrichesthatthesepeoplehad,sixdeadcowslying
higgledy-piggledyanddistendedbydecay.Andallthisisverystrange
because,onSaturdaymorning--whenAmericanB-52sunloadeddozenof
bombsthatkilled115men,womenandchildren--nothinghappened.
別の部屋にはここの村人達が持っていた唯一の財産がある。乱雑に転がっている腐食して
膨張した６頭の牛の死骸。この全ての光景が不思議だ。日曜日の朝、米軍のB－５2が爆弾
をいくつも落として１１５人の男、女、子供が死んだ時、「何も起こらなかった」から
だ。

これは分かってることだ。アメリカの国防省がそう言ったのだから。あの晩、ペンタゴン
のスポークスマンはアフガニスタン東部での一般市民の犠牲者がでたという報告について
の質問を受けて、それは事実ではない、米軍はビンラディンのアルカイダ組織に関連する
軍事施設をち密に狙っているからだ、と説明した。この件に関し引き続きペンタゴンの発
言にはいくらか動揺があったが、始めの「これは起こらなかったのだ」という断言を撤回
していない。

法の鏡の中に入ってしまったのかは誰も分からない。目がさめた時から、私の頭の中に
は、残骸と山中の無実の犠牲者、ハイテクと１０００ポンドの「無」(nothing)の対峙が
あった。

mujahedinsoldiersofCommanderZamanwhohadbeenkilledwhenUS
bombshitthegovernmentofficeinwhichtheyweresleeping.Andnow,ithad
happenedagain.
今日は、西側支持、反タリバンのムジャヒディン司令官、ハジ・ザマン・ガムシャリクの
家で始まった。彼は慎重に米政府から物資と資金の調達を受けている。その前日、私は
ジャララバードの死体安置所へと彼に同行した。そこには、役所で寝ている間に米軍の爆
撃を受けて死んだザマン司令官のムジャヒディン戦死達のずたずたになった７体の死体が
安置されていた。そして今同じことがまた起こった。

３台のトラックの荷台に乗せられて、もう７人のムジャヒディンの血まみれの死体がもう
７体。彼等はランディ・キールの村の宿で眠っていたところ、昨日の朝６：３０頃爆撃に
やられて死んだ。

ザマン司令官は、何年も山の中でソ連と戦った誇り高く堂々とした男だ。だが、彼があれ
ほど弱々しく見えたのは初めてだ。「こいつらは昨日私が送ったんだ。警備のために。」
そうつぶやいた。

それでも、司令官は私達にムジャヒディンの護衛を同行させてくれた。そして、私達はラ
ンディ・キールへと出発した。始めの７人の戦士達が死んだ役所の残骸を見た。そして昨
日の朝７人が戦死した宿も。その宿であった瓦礫となった民家には「無」(nothing)の小

そこではファジル・カリームとその兄弟、マホモール・グーラブ、その甥、ハシズ・ウ
ラーの３人が死んだ。「彼等は家族だった。ごく普通の。」一緒にいた現地の長老、ハ
ジ・モハッメド・ナジールが言った。「彼等はテロリストじゃなかった。テロリストは向
こうの山の中だ。」

私達は続いてホワイトマウンテンの方へ向かって進んだ。そこでは何百というアルカイダ
のメンバーと恐らくウサマ・ビンラディン自身もトラボラの洞くつに隠れている。Bー５２
が空高く飛んでいた。谷間からもくもくとした黒い煙りが上っているのが見えた。あそこ
では確かに何かが起きている。そして、私達は廃虚と化したカマアドに到着した。哀愁の
こもった残骸の中にひとつだけ困った物を見つけた。弾丸ベルトのついた古い革製のホル
スターだ。あの晩アルカイダのメンバーの何人かがここで一夜を過ごし、それを知った米
軍が狙ったというのも考えられる。

しかし、２２年間も内戦が続いているのだから、アフガニスタンのどの家庭にも軍の遺物
はあるだろう。それに村人はここ2週間はアラブ人もタリバン兵士も誓って見ていないと
言っている。確かに新しい４０の墓穴をうめるだけのテロリストはいなかったはずだ。誰
かが教えてくれた。墓穴に入っている死体のいくつかは完全なものではなく、体の一部分
だけのもあるそうだ。

hadonlyonemomentofrealfear,whenanAmericanB-52flewoverhead.We

lookingdownonus,theonlytrafficontheroad.Then,toeveryone'srelief,
thebomberveeredaway.
この「何も起こらなかった」村では白人は怒りで迎えらるだろうと警告を受けて来たが、
そこで私の出会ったものは、絶望と困惑だった。私は恐い思いをした時が一度だけあっ
た。米軍のBー５２が頭上を飛んで来た時だ。私達は列を止め、車から這い出て両側の原野
に急いで散った。機体はゆっくりと旋回した。私は電子の目が、その道を走っていた唯一
の車だった自分達を見ているということを意識していた。そして、皆の安心したことに、
その爆撃機は進路を変えて飛び去っていった。

Beforeweleftthecity,anAmericancolleagueinJalalabadtelephonedthe
Pentagonandinformedthemofourplanstotraveltothevillagewherenothing
happened.Ican'thelpwondering,intheselooking-glasstimes,whatthatB-52
wouldhavedonetoourconvoyifthattelephonecallhadnotbeenmade.
Perhapsnothingwouldhavehappenedtometoo.
街を出る前、ジャララバードのアメリカ人の同僚がペンタゴンに電話して、私達が「何も
起こらなかった」村まで行くことを知らせておいたのだ。もしあの電話がなかったら、こ
の鏡の中の世界にいる時、B－５２は私達の車に何をしただろうかと思わずにはいられな
い。おそらく私にも「何も起こらなかった」のだろう。
