Polish woman taken as Japanese show little sympathy for hostage

Polish woman taken as Japanese show little sympathy for hostage

By Deborah Cameron, Herald Correspondent in Tokyo

October 29, 2004

Broke, alone and wearing baggy shorts that marked him out as a foreigner, Shosei Koda, a Japanese tourist, set off on the road for Baghdad, an easy target for terrorists.

Now captured and threatened with death, it is a terrible end to his adventure. But sympathy for him in Japan is in short supply. On Wednesday his family was deluged with telephone calls throughout the night from people telling them what a fool their son was, television reports said. Police responded by cordoning off the house to protect the family.

In internet chatrooms his plight was treated as a joke, with some posters offering to send him miso soup and others writing that if he was on a journey of self discovery then he should be left to find himself. "If we have another earthquake we will completely forget this guy," one chatroom entry said.

The Al-Jazeera satellite network reported that a Polish woman working for US forces in Iraq was also kidnapped. A hitherto unknown group demanded that Poland withdraw its forces from the country before they freed her, the network said yesterday. The Polish Defence Minister, Jerzy Szmajdzinski, responded by saying his country's troops would not withdraw.

Mr Koda, 24, who left Japan for a working holiday in New Zealand in January, had not been in touch with his family since July but reportedly told a fellow traveller in Amman, Jordan, that he planned to spend a week touring Iraq.

Yesterday Mr Koda's father, who is in poor health, told a news conference attended by representatives from Al-Jazeera that he wanted to make a direct plea for his son's life.

"My son doesn't support the Self Defence Forces [Japan's military] being stationed in Iraq or the United States policy," Masumi Koda, 54, said as the 48-hour deadline set by the kidnappers drew near.

The Iraqi militant group Army of Ansar al-Sunna said it had killed 11 members of the Iraqi National Guard abducted last week and posted pictures of the killings on its website yesterday.

An Islamic group has claimed responsibility for the kidnapping yesterday of three foreign election workers in Afghanistan and said it had moved them out of the capital, Kabul, Al-Jazeera reported.
