Resistance pounds US al-Habbaniyah base with mortars Sunday evening.

In a bulletin posted at 7:15pm Mecca time Sunday evening, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that Iraqi Resistance forces a short while earlier had fired 15 mortar rounds into the US base in al-Habbaniyah west of al-Fallujah.

The correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported that smoke was rising over the American-occupied facility and the wail of sirens could be heard from inside the compound. US helicopters were hovering over the facility at the time of reporting, but it was impossible to ascertain anything more detailed on the nature or extent of US casualties.

Al-Khalidiyah.

US forces put al-Khalidiyah on lock down begin mass raids and searches at dawn Sunday.

In a dispatch posted at 11:40am Mecca time Sunday morning, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that a joint force of US occupation troops and Iraqi puppet army forces carried out a campaign of house-to-house raids and searches in most neighborhoods of the town of al-Khalidiyah, west of Baghdad at dawn Sunday.

The correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported local eyewitnesses as saying that the joint force closed all the city’s entrances and exits at dawn and imposed a curfew on the citizens. They then began their raids.

Baghdad.

President Saddam Hussein, defense team storm out of eighth session of US-staged “trial” in Baghdad.

Iraqi President Saddam Hussein and his defense team on Sunday walked out of the eighth session of the “trial” rigged up by the US and the regime it installed in Baghdad. The President, other “defendants” and the defense team stormed out shortly after the session began, Mafkarat al-Islam reported, based on monitored BBC coverage.

According to the BBC as monitored by Mafkarat al-Islam, the newly appointed “Judge” Ra’uf ‘Abd ar-Rahman ordered Barzan at-Tikriti, Saddam Hussein’s half brother, expelled from the “courtroom” for casting doubt on the legality of the kangaroo court. Barzan at-Tikriti had stood to try to report to the court on the state of his health, according to al-Jazeera satellite TV. At-Tikriti suffers from spinal cancer and has been usuccessfully seeking release to a medical facility. After the “Judge” tried to silence him, claiming that he had been trying to make a political speech, at-Tikriti denounced the “court” as “the daughter of a whore.”

Iraqi President Saddam Hussein reportedly rose and shouted “down with traitors! Down with America!” Guards physically dragged at-Tikriti out of the “courtroom.” After that, the “Judge” ordered the expulsion of one of the Iraqi President’s defense attorneys who was protesting the developments, prompting the entire defense team to walk out in protest.

The “Judge” appointed four new defense lawyers without consulting and against the wishes of the “defendants.” The Iraqi President, a copy of the Qur’an in hand, denounced the action. He denounced the “Court” saying that it and its rules had been formed by American order. He denounced the court-appointed “defense attorneys” as wrongdoers. Moving to leave, the “Judge” told the President to remain and guards wrestled him into his chair, but then the “Judge” instead ordered the President expelled from the “courtroom.”

The American AP reported that the US-staged “trial” continued with an unidentified “witness” giving “testimony” from behind a screen. The new “defense attorneys” appointed by the US-installed “Judge” neither sought to cross examine the “witness” or make statements.

The American Associated Press (AP) reported that former US Attorney General Ramsey Clark, who has joined the legal defense team of the Iraqi President but did not attend Sunday’s session, denounced the court as “lawless.”

“Now the court is seated without the defendants’ counsel of choice,” the AP quoted Clark as saying. “This is wrong. They have the right to their own counsel and for that counsel to hear and question testimony made against the defendants,” the AP quoted Clark as saying in New York.

The kangaroo court “trial” of Saddam Hussein and seven other top Iraqi officials resumed Sunday after a hiatus of about a week as international organizations like Human Rights Watch condemned the proceedings because of the overt involvement of the US-installed Iraqi puppet regime in the activities of the “Judges.”

On Friday, 27 January 2006, Human Rights Watch issued a report that said that the recent measures that infringe on the independence of the judges threaten the ability to hold a fair trial and also raise genuine fears as to the ability of the court to maintain its independence.

The former “Judge” in the case, Rezgar Amin tendered his resignation in response to intense pressure and interference by the US-installed regime upon him and his work.
