英国DEFRAの口蹄疫に関する情報
英国は日本と同様に島国であって、過去に口蹄疫の大発生を経験している：2001年の2月から9月にかけて総計2,030 例の口蹄疫が確認され、また2007年にも小規模な発生があった。
2001年の口蹄疫について、ウイルスの感染経路に関する調査研究報告の詳細がオンラインで公開されている。これは現在宮崎県で拡大中の口蹄疫を封じるための参考情報になるだろう。

英国内で最初の発症が起こった農場が1 箇所：Burnside Farmであったことが特定された。

consumed by pigs on Burnside Farm (outbreak FMD/04）
感染源のウイルスの侵入ルートはBurnside Farmで豚が食べた肉または肉製品と考えられた。
· Disease was present at Burnside farm on 12 February and
was probably present at the beginning of February/late January.
確認されたのは2月 12日であるが、2001年1月末から2月の初めに発症していたらしい。
· The movement of infected pigs from Burnside farm on 8
and 15 February spread disease to pigs in the Essex abattoir
(outbreak FMD/01) from which disease spread to a limited
number of other farms in Essex and Kent.
Burnside Farmの感染豚が2月8日−15日の間にエセックスの屠畜場に運ばれてそこで感染した豚を介して他の農場に広がった。
· Windborne spread from Burnside Farm resulted in the
transmission of FMD virus to sheep at Prestwick Hall farm
(outbreak FMD/06) and their subsequent sale through
Hexham and Longtown markets resulted in infection being
widely disseminated to other parts of the country by animal
or mechanical means.

· There is no evidence of the existence of FMD disease in the UK, pre-dating the
development of disease at Burnside farm.

· The source of the virus for the 2001 epidemic was most
probably infected or contaminated meat or meat products
but it is unlikely that the origin of this material or the route
by which it entered the UK and reached Burnside Farm will
ever be identified.
2001年の口蹄疫大発生の源はウイルスが汚染した（豚の餌として使われた）肉または肉製品であろうと考えられたが、それがどのようにして英国内に入って最初の農場に到達したか、その経路は不明のまま。

１ 冷凍された状態でウイルスは感染力を長期間保持する。
2 問題のウイルスは東アジア（韓国、日本、中国）で2000年に発生したものと同じＯ型であった。
3 餌の肉、または肉製品は正規の輸入でなく、偽装された品目あるいは密輸入が疑われた。
4 羊は感染しても症状が顕著でなく発症が分かりにくい。

• The following list shows some of the routes by which FMD
can be spread, but where good biosecurity measures can
help to reduce the risk.

and foxes, which can carry infected material on their feet or
coats, but do not become infected themselves.
発病はしないがウイルスを含む汚染物質を足や体毛に付着させて運びまわる可能性がある動物達：犬、ネコ、鶏、キツネなど
– Contamination through contact with infected animals
from neighbouring farms where adequate separation
distances are not in place.
隣接する他の農場から十分な距離がとられていないため感染動物と接触する場合
– Animals eating infected animal products.
感染した動物の製品を餌にする場合
（注、訳者による）
１ 屠殺されて畜肉として人間が消費する部分以外の部分は様々な形で製品化されてペットや飼養される家畜の餌とされている。ＢＳＥの発生もこれに関係していたが、ＦＭＤでも同様の問題が起こっているらしい。
２ 上のリストに漏れているが、ネズミや虫などが汚染された農場からウイルスを運び出す可能性がある。
３ 風に乗って運ばれるＦＭＤウイルスがあるかどうか、確証は見つからない（状況証拠から推測された）。
４ 汚染された水に含まれるウイルスに要注意。イギリスでワクチンの製造・研究をやっていた施設の配水管からの漏水汚染で口蹄疫が発生した（ウイルスの遺伝子検査でワクチン用だったことが判明）。畜産農家は飼養動物の飲料水が安全かどうか、特に河川水を利用している場合は注意する必要がある。

DEFRAサイト内検索でFMDとJapanをキーワードにして検出した情報として、FMDについての各国の研究体制や取り組みに関する概観が述べられていた。

Foot and Mouth Disease in East Asia
1 Disease Report
Japan has reported a possible outbreak of FMD in
cattle in Miyazaki region (OIE, 2010; see map).
Clinical signs were reported on 9th April to a
private vet, samples were taken on 16th April
and a PCR test confirmed FMD on the 20th April.
Virus isolation and sequencing will provide
definitive confirmation and identification.
農水省の発表で、4月20日が最初の感染の確認例となったこととは一致しているが、疑わしい症状が獣医に報告されたのが4月9日で、検体が16日に検査に送られたとある。検査まで1週間放置されたことが事実であれば、由々しきことである。
この情報は、マップで見ると4月22日の時点であり、ウイルスの型（検査結果はO型）の決定以前の記述である。OIEに日本から送られた報告に基づくものであろう。
