米高校で学校支給ノート PC のウェブカムを遠隔操作し、生徒の行動をチェック

米ペンシルバニア州で、学校で支給されているノート PC のウェブカメラが学校側によって操作されプライバシーが侵害されているとして、学区を相手取った集団訴訟が起こされているそうだ (本家 /. 記事より) 。

学校側によってウェブカメラが操作されていることは、ある高校生が「家庭での不適切な言動」について罰せられたことで明らかになったとのこと。この件の証拠としてウェブカメラによって撮影された写真が使われ、撮影者は副校長だったとされているそうだ。

なんとも不気味な話だが、遠隔からウェブカメラ操作をするくらいであれば、生徒の行動をトラッキングするために何か他のものも仕込まれているのではないかと疑心暗鬼になっていまいそうだ。

According to the filings in Blake J Robbins v Lower Merion School District (PA) et al, the laptops issued to high-school students in the well-heeled Philly suburb have webcams that can be covertly activated by the schools' administrators, who have used this facility to spy on students and even their families. The issue came to light when the Robbins's child was disciplined for "improper behavior in his home" and the Vice Principal used a photo taken by the webcam as evidence. The suit is a class action, brought on behalf of all students issued with these machines.

If true, these allegations are about as creepy as they come. I don't know about you, but I often have the laptop in the room while I'm getting dressed, having private discussions with my family, and so on. The idea that a school district would not only spy on its students' clickstreams and emails (bad enough), but also use these machines as AV bugs is purely horrifying.

Schools are in an absolute panic about kids divulging too much online, worried about pedos and marketers and embarrassing photos that will haunt you when you run for office or apply for a job in 10 years. They tell kids to treat their personal details as though they were precious.

your privacy is worthless and you shouldn't try to protect it.

Update: The school district admits that student laptops were shipped with software for covertly activating their webcams, but denies wrongdoing.

02. tk 2010年2月24日 13:02:50: fNs.vR2niMp1. http://internet.watch.impress.co.jp/cda/news/2005/01/19/6118.html Webカメラで監視するウイルス作成の容疑者、スペインで捕まる 　スペインの治安警察は現地時間の17日、マドリードでウイルス作成の容疑で男性を逮捕したと発表した。 　発表によると、今回の捜査は「TIC-TAC」作戦と名付けられ、マドリードで展開していた。2004年7月にウイルス感染の通報で始まったこの作戦では、捜査官の分析により、トロイの木馬型ウイルスであることが判明。英Sophosによれば、このウイルスが「W32/Rbot-GR」だという。 　Rbot-GRは、2004年8月に発見されたウイルスで、マイクロソフト製品の脆弱性を悪用することでPC内にトロイの木馬をインストールし、感染したマシンをコントロールする。PCにWebカメラが接続されている場合に、それらのデバイスを乗っ取って監視活動を行なう場合もある。 　スペインの治安警察では、Rbot-GRはインターネットのほか、P2Pファイル共有ネットワークなどを通じて感染を拡大していたとしている。
