日本女子プロ野球リーグに所属する小西美加投手（大阪）や、ヤクルト・川端慎吾内野手の妹、友紀内野手（京都）らプロ選手５人が初めてＷ杯代表に選ばれた。前回２０１０年Ｗ杯でＭＶＰに輝いた六角彩子内野手（サムライ）らも順当に選出されたが、茨城ゴールデンゴールズの片岡安祐美内野手は最終選考で落選した。

　元西武投手の新谷博監督が率いる日本代表は、８月５日から愛媛・松山で最終合宿を行い、同８日にカナダへ向け出発。大会は同10日に開幕し、ベネズエラ、米国、キューバなど８カ国が総当たりで１次リーグを戦い、同18、19日に順位決定戦を含めた決勝トーナメントを行う。

　第１、２回大会は米国、第３回からは日本が優勝している。

　日本女子野球協会は２２日、カナダで８月に開催される第５回女子ワールドカップ（Ｗ杯）で３連覇を目指す日本代表２０人を発表し、初めて女子プロリーグから小西美加投手（大阪）、川端友紀内野手（京都）ら５選手を選出した。
　日本代表候補は選考会を兼ねた合宿を重ね、４月には女子プロリーグ選抜と強化試合を実施するなど候補を絞り込んできた。前回大会で最優秀選手に輝いた六角彩子内野手（サムライ）は代表入りしたが、茨城ゴールデンゴールズの片岡安祐美内野手は落選した。
　日本代表の新谷博監督はこの日、愛媛県で合宿を終え「相当高いチーム力を持っている。力を出してくれれば十分、優勝に届くと思う」と手応えを強調した。アマチュアとしても女子Ｗ杯に出場した小西は「プロを背負うので、より強くなった自分を見せたい」と意気込みを口にした。

ソフトボール女子の世界選手権（カナダ・ホワイトホース）最終日の２２日、敗者復活戦から決勝に勝ち上がった日本は、米国を延長十回に２―１で破った。７０年大会以来、４２年ぶり２度目の優勝。日本はオーストラリアとの敗者復活戦に２―０で完封勝ち。エースの上野が敗者復活戦と決勝を先発し、速球を駆使して好投した。五輪種目から外れたために、あまり注目されないのが寂しい。

EDMONTON - Having set the bar with an appearance in the final of the last Women's World Cup of Baseball, Australia came into this year's tournament with high expectations.

Unfortunately for the girls from Down Under, they ran into the defending champions in the semifinal and had their tournament come to a premature end on Saturday.

Japan earned a spot into today's final with a 5-1 win over Australia at Telus Field.

"I'm quite proud of what the girls did today, they fought quite hard," said Australian head coach John Gaynor.

"Japan smacked our butts 10-0 two days ago and we were lost. But we were able to turn it around, and I thought we played pretty well.

"We had a couple of bad innings and it cost us. We got the same amount of hits as they did; we just didn't capitalize on our chances."

A three-run inning in the third and another two runs in the fifth accounted for Japan's scoring. Australia responded with a run in the third, then stranded a pair of runners.

"We were able to get one hit here, one there, but we weren't able to get them grouped up," said Gaynor.

"They had two innings where they had chances to score and they made the most of it. That's why they're the best in the world."

Two years ago in Venezuela, Australia made it to the final before losing out to Japan.

This time around, by virtue of finishing fourth after the round-robin, Australia was forced to face Japan in the semifinal.

"I think we played poorly throughout the tournament," said Gaynor.

"I think besides the Netherlands, we probably made the most errors of any team. That's what's disappointing.

"We put in the hard work, but for whatever reason, some days we'd turn up and we'd be really hot and the next day, it was like there were a bunch of kids playing out there."

Regardless, there were plenty of bright spots for the Australians to build on throughout the tournament.

Christina Kreppold was one of the top players in the tournament, going into the semifinal batting .600.

"Yeah, but it's a team sport," Kreppold said.

"As much as you might be doing alright, I'd rather not play that well and have the team do better. It's just one of those things."

Despite falling short of their goal, having a team at the World Cup will help the development of the game in Australia.

"I think all the senior players on this team have been helping grow the sport a fair bit," Kreppold said.

"We've been out there trying to get young girls to join our local clubs and training them up to be the next superstars of Australia."

The performance of the Australian team throughout the tournament has shown they can compete with traditional powerhouses like Japan, Canada and the U.S.

"Usually we're quite a strong hitting team and we're able to get back-to-back hits and back each other up," Kreppold said.

"But we just struggled to get it to all gel at the right time. Hopefully we can get all that together (Sunday) and bring home a bronze medal."

Australia will play either Canada or the U.S. for bronze, starting at 1 p.m. at Telus Field.

Last night's game between Canada and the U.S. to determine who faces Japan for gold was still in progress at press time.

WNT: U.S. defeats Canada; will play for gold

Underwood tallies five hits, drives in three

EDMONTON, Alberta -- Malaika Underwood led an offensive explosion and Stacy Piagno tossed a gem to help lead the USA Baseball Women's National Team to a 17-4 win over Canada in the semifinals.

The victory advances Team USA (6-2) to the gold medal game against Japan Sunday night at 7 p.m. (ET). The U.S. also assures itself of a medal for the fifth consecutive World Cup.

Piagno was masterful for 5 2/3 innings as she faced the minimum through five innings. Canada tallied two hits in the first four innings, but each runner was erased on a double play. Four runs crossed the plate for Canada in the sixth, but only one was earned. Marti Sementelli tallied the final out for the U.S.

Team USA opened up an early 1-0 lead in the second and never looked back. Underwood singled to lead off the inning, stole second and moved to third on a base hit by Michelle Snyder. Bessie Noll gave the U.S. the lead with a sacrifice fly.

A seven-run third inning put the U.S. firmly in control. Jill Barrett worked a lead-off walk and was standing on third after a Natalie Land base hit. A fielder's choice off the bat of Caitlin Everett made it 2-0. Underwood doubled and an error pushed the lead to four and loaded the bases. Alexa Maldonado launched a fly ball to deep right field for a bases-clearing triple. An errant throw back to the infield allowed Maldonado to score for an 8-0 lead.

Underwood started a two-out rally in the fourth inning with a triple down the right field line. Snyder drove her in with a base hit to right.

Twelve batters came to the plate in the top of the sixth and eight scored as the U.S. opened up a 17-0 lead. A lead-off walk to Holmes started the string of hitters. Underwood drove her in with her second double of the game. Snyder followed with an RBI double and moved to third on a throwing error. Noll's second sacrifice fly of the game pushed the lead to 12-0.

With two on and two out, the U.S. pushed across five more runs. Land singled home a run and a two-base error by the Canadian pitcher allowed two runners to score for a 15-0 lead. Holmes dumped a single into centerfield and Underwood collected her second double of the inning to cap the scoring.

Needing eight runs to keep the game going, Canada tried to mount a rally in the bottom of the sixth. With two on and nobody out, an error allowed Canada's first run of the game to cross the plate. A sacrifice fly, a base hit and a bases loaded walk made it a 17-4 contest before Sementelli struck out Bradi Wall to end the game.

EDMONTON -- In a battle of the bats, Canada overpowered Australia 17-13 to claim bronze Sunday at the fifth IBAF Women's World Cup.

Canada built an 8-1 lead through three innings before Australia fought back to within one run in the fifth. Canada went ahead 17-8 after six innings before Australia scored five seventh-inning runs.

But pitcher Autumn Mills of Burlington, Ont., came in to get a fielder's choice and strikeout to end the game.

Ottawa's Hannah Martensen was credited with the win, which gave Canada a fourth medal in five World Cups. They won bronze in 2004 and 2006 and silver in 2008.

Canada was able to rebound from Saturday's 17-4 semifinal loss to the United States, who played Japan for gold on Sunday.

"I'm very proud of my team and we're happy to be bronze medalists," said Canadian manager Andre Lachance. "To lose the way we did last night and have a crazy game like today and come out on top says a lot about the character of our team."

Canada jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the second when Edmonton's Nicole Luchanksi hit a three-run, inside-the-park home run.

Australia scored one in the top half of the third off Canadian starter Vanessa Riopel of Repentigny, Que., before Canada notched three runs in the bottom of the inning with a bases-loaded double from Ashley Stephenson of Mississauga, Ont.

But Australia stormed back with three runs in each of the fourth and fifth innings to make it 8-7.

"Australians never quit and they will battle you until the final out," said Lachance. "Today they proved that."

Canada answered back in the bottom of the fifth when Quebec's Stephanie Savoie tripled in three runs to make it 12-7.

After Australia scored once in the top of the sixth, Canada put up a five runs in the bottom of the inning to make it 17-8.

"The victory is big for women's baseball in Canada," said Lachance. "We're really working hard to develop the sport for girls at the grassroots level which hopefully will lead to success at the international level for years to come."
