Magnitude-6.7 earthquake shakes Costa Rica

Buildings in capital San José are being evacuated, but no casualties have been reported. Officials are assessing the damage from a quake that was felt across the country of 4.5 million.

A strong earthquake hit most of Costa Rica at 8:42 a.m. Wednesday morning.

Preliminary reports by the Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Costa Rica (Ovsicori) say the tremor had its epicenter in the Nicoya Península, 6 miles northeast from the city of Hojancha, in the northwestern province of Guanacaste.

Local news Noticias Repretel said they had phone reports of serious damages in houses in the canton of Santa Cruz.

The Red Cross and National Emergency Commission have not reported any casualties.

In many areas across the country, residents reported cellphone networks down, but local telephone lines and Internet service is working in many areas.
