Kyodo News, May 12, 2015 (emphasis added): A magnitude 6.8 earthquake rocked a wide area of Japan centering on the northeast early Wednesday [and] observed in areas ranging from Hokkaido in the north to Gifu Prefecture in central Japan.

The temblor, which struck just after 6 a.m. local time, was sparked by the Pacific tectonic plate “subducting,” or moving under, the main land plate, he added. Hasegawa warned that more tremors may be on the way. “It’s not just limited to this area alone.”
