米国海軍は、１９１８年１１月、ボストンの監獄に収容されている囚人の中から、健康な６２人の水夫を、実験に参加すれば、放免することを条件に、選んだ。

海軍の軍医は、スペイン風邪で絶望的な状態にある患者から粘膜や粘液を集めて、囚人の幾人かに散布した。

ある囚人は、その液滴を、目に落とされた。

スペイン風邪患者の鼻の奥や中隔を拭った綿を、囚人たちの鼻の中隔に、塗りたくった。

軍医は、１０人の囚人を選んで、３日以上危険な状態にある患者たちへ行かせ、患者の息を吸い込んだり、話しかけたり、患者の咳を５回受けること要求した。

選ばれた１０人の囚人は、１０人の患者に対して、それを繰り返すことを求められた。

しかし、不思議な事に、囚人の中からは、１人として、スペイン風邪にかかる者は、いなかった。

海軍は、サンフランシスコで、同じことを、５０人に対して行ったが、だれも、スペイン風邪にかかる者はいなかった。
