太平洋戦争で、南方の島々が、次々に米軍の手に落ち、フィリピン侵攻が目前に迫った時、昭和天皇裕仁は、大本営が計画した「勝防衛作戦」に、署名した。

「勝云々」とは、名ばかりで、奇跡でも起こらない限り、敗戦は避けられない状況だった。

作戦は、２５万人の兵士と５万人の水兵に、自己犠牲を強いるものだった。

実際、自己破壊という言葉が使われていた。
