Fahd calls for global stand against Israeli terror

By Saleh Al-Neami, Arab News Staff

RIYADH/ GAZA, 22 January

Saudi Arabia yesterday urged the international community to take a firm stand to stop Israel's terrorism against the Palestinians.
The weekly Cabinet meeting, chaired by Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Fahd, also denounced Israel's brutal attacks against unarmed Palestinian people.
The meeting condemned Israeli aggression targeting destruction of the Palestinian infrastructure, including the demolition of homes and buildings belonging to the Palestinian Authority.
The international community must take "a firm stand against Israel's aggression and terrorism so that it will not lead to further deterioration and more instability in the Middle East region, the Cabinet said.
Israel yesterday reoccupied the Palestinian town of Tulkarem three days after Israeli tanks moved into positions outside Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat’s headquarters in Ramallah, also on the West Bank.
Israeli forces on Saturday dynamited the offices of the Palestinian Broadcasting Corporation in Ramallah.
Israeli tanks and troops took over Tulkarem in the West Bank yesterday in what Palestinian officials said was the first reoccupation of an entire city during their 16-month-old uprising.
Palestinian President Yasser Arafat, confined in his Ramallah headquarters by an encirclement of Israeli tanks, condemned the Israeli raid in Tulkarem, and reaffirmed he would seek a Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital even if it cost him his life.
"They have crossed all red lines and our people cannot stand with their eyes closed to these Israeli attempts, and the proof of this is the strong and firm steadfastness of our people in Tulkarem," he told reporters.
The incursion into Tulkarem in the northern West Bank was in reprisal for a Palestinian attack in northern Israel last week in which six people were killed, and signaled yet another setback to US peace efforts.
Hospital officials said Israeli troops shot dead a Palestinian man in a gunfight with Palestinians in Tulkarem and killed a man in a battle with gunmen in the West Bank city of Ramallah yesterday.
The army had no immediate comment.
A second member of the Palestinian security forces died of wounds sustained yesterday in an exchange of fire with Israeli forces which have invaded Ramallah, Palestinian security officials said.
Speaking to Palestinian intellectuals in Ramallah, where Israeli tanks have taken up positions just a few dozen meters from his offices, Arafat said:
"The Palestinian state will be established with Al-Quds Al-Sharif (East Jerusalem) as its capital.
By God, I see it coming, martyred or alive."
Witnesses said Israeli tanks occupied positions throughout Tulkarem, a move the army said was in response to the shooting during a Jewish coming-of-age party in northern Israel on Thursday.
The army said the gunman was from Tulkarem and it had entered the city to strike at a "large terror infrastructure."
Palestinian minister Saeb Erekat said in a statement:
"The reoccupation of Tulkarem is part of a gradual reoccupation of all Palestinian Authority areas."
But a senior Israeli security source called it a "short-term operation.
There is no intention of reoccupying Tulkarem."
Some Palestinians defied the Israeli-imposed curfew and Palestinian gunmen in eastern Tulkarem fired at troops, witnesses said.
Soldiers searched houses and detained several people.
Erekat called the incursion "state terrorism" and said it showed Israel planned to retake all areas it had turned over to Palestinian control in recent years under interim peace accords.
Israel has made frequent incursions into Palestinian-ruled territory, sometimes lasting for weeks at a time, during the Palestinian uprising against occupation, but has never before established military control over an entire city.
Israeli officials have said their actions were aimed at seizing the people behind attacks on Israelis, but Palestinians have accused Israel of trying to topple Arafat.
Israel has denied any plan to harm or topple Arafat but has vowed to keep him in Ramallah until he arrests the alleged killers of an Israeli Cabinet minister.
In his remarks to the intellectuals, Arafat recalled Israel's 1982 invasion of Lebanon when Israeli forces besieged the Palestinian leader and PLO fighters in Beirut.
"I tell these Israeli tanks this is not the first time and will not be the last time they place us under siege...We are here to stay and will not succumb," he said.
Tulkarem has been the focus of renewed violence in the past week since Palestinian Raed Al-Karmi was killed in a bomb blast blamed on Israel.
