French Minister: Can't Confirm One Terrorist in Algeria Was French

PARIS--France's interior minister Manuel Valls Monday said he can't confirm that one of the terrorists who attacked a gas facility last week in In Amenas, south east Algeria, was French.

Citing intelligence sources, French daily Le Parisien Monday reported that at least one French national was part of the group of terrorists who took workers as hostages. Algerian forces stormed the facility, killing 32 kidnappers and freeing as many as 85 Algerian workers and 107 foreigners, according to the Algerian authorities.

Manuel Valls said the kidnappers came from several countries and continents, adding they had been heavily armed and that they probably came from the same Islamist extremist groups which took over the northern part of Mali where French troops are engaged in a massive military operation to help Malian forces to regain control over the region.
