放射線被曝によって、アテローム性動脈硬化症になり 脳血管が萎縮し、血流が滞ることによって、左前頭葉ならびに側頭葉に、萎縮が生じる。
被曝線量が高かった、チェルノブイリの除染作業員に現れた症状で、言語記憶・学習能力低下、会話能力の低下などを来たした。
視覚記憶は、影響を受けなかった。
脳の左側が、損傷されるのは、利き腕と関係があり、脳が機能する側に、大量の血液が流れるためだと考えられる。
血液に、放射性物質が含まれていれば、血流量の大きい部位（血管・組織）は、被曝の影響を受ける
